Cheesy Potato and Bacon Casserole

Cheesy Potato and Bacon Casserole is the ultimate comfort food for camping, combining creamy potatoes, crispy bacon, and gooey cheese.

Equipment

  • Dutch oven (10- or 12-inch)
  • Heat source (charcoal or campfire)
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Mixing bowl
  • Tongs or Spatula
  • Potato peeler (optional)
  • Heat-Resistant Gloves
  • Serving spoon

Ingredients
  

  • 6-8 medium potatoes thinly sliced (Yukon Gold or Russet recommended)
  • 8-10 strips of bacon cooked and crumbled
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend
  • 1 cup cream or milk
  • 2 cloves garlic minced (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon butter for greasing
  • Optional toppings: green onions sour cream, or hot sauce

Instructions
 

Prep Your Ingredients:

  • Slice the potatoes into thin, even slices.
  • Cook the bacon until crispy, then crumble.
  • Shred the cheese and set aside.

Set Up Your Cooking Area:

  • Grease the inside of the Dutch oven with butter.
  • Prepare a steady campfire or charcoal setup for consistent heat.

Layer the Ingredients:

  • Spread a layer of potato slices on the bottom of the Dutch oven.
  • Sprinkle crumbled bacon and shredded cheese on top.
  • Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, reserving some cheese for the top.
  • Drizzle cream or milk evenly over the layers.

Cook the Casserole:

  • Cover the Dutch oven with its lid.
  • Place over the heat source, adding coals on top for even cooking.
  • Cook for 45-60 minutes, checking occasionally. The casserole is done when the potatoes are tender and the cheese is bubbling.

Serve and Enjoy:

  • Carefully remove the Dutch oven using heat-resistant gloves.
  • Let the casserole cool for a few minutes to set.
  • Serve with optional toppings like green onions, sour cream, or hot sauce.
